Over the course of the Live Connected, Lead Change capital campaign, which concluded in December 2018, many highlights include generous philanthropy from organizations who supported a wide range of College priorities. In looking back as we celebrate the opening of the Rockwell Integrated Sciences Center, for instance, it is gratifying to recall the early contributions of the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation and the Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI). The Mellon Foundation supported the creation of the Environmental Science and Studies Program, one of a very few such combined programs offered by the country’s elite undergraduate colleges. HHMI assisted the College’s biology faculty in deploying new approaches to teach and mentor students in order to bolster their success. These activities are admirably housed in the new Rockwell Center.

Additional highlights:

  • Artists from Muslim-majority cultures participated in three semesters of campus residencies and dialogues because of the Association of Performing Arts Professionals, Doris Duke Charitable Foundation, and the Doris Duke Foundation for Islamic Art;
  • Students have joined in summer research opportunities because of the Frank Family Charitable Foundation, the Henry Luce Foundation’s Clare Boothe Luce Program, and the William T. Morris Foundation.
  • More than a dozen colleges and cultural institutions participating in the Lehigh Valley Engaged Humanities Consortium are recording and telling the stories of diversity and change over the region’s past 50 years because of the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation;
  • There is a new home for German studies and international visiting scholars because of the Max Kade Foundation; and,
  • A chair for interdisciplinary teaching will facilitate, next year, the first bachelor of science in engineering created at Lafayette in more than a century because of the Air Products Foundation and CEO, President, and Chairman Seifi Ghasemi H’17.

As Lafayette continues to grow in size and stature, we look forward to new opportunities that will serve as hallmarks of distinction for the College. Your partnership with us makes it all possible, thank you!
